What Are AI UGC Ads—and What Are They Not?

AI UGC ads use AI-generated presenters, voices, or scenes to create advertising in a conversational, creator-style format.

The term can be confusing. Traditional user-generated content originates with people using or discussing a product. An AI-generated presenter is not automatically a user, and a synthetic video is not evidence of a real customer experience.

Three approaches that get lumped together

For production purposes, it helps to separate three approaches:

  • A virtual presenter explaining product information.
  • A clearly framed fictional scene illustrating a customer problem.
  • A genuine customer account presented with appropriate authorization.

These approaches can look similar on screen, but they communicate different things. The first two are presentations you control. The third is someone else's experience, and it carries obligations the first two do not.

Choose the role before writing the script

A presenter might say:

"Here is how this reporting workflow operates."

That is different from:

"I switched my agency to this platform last month."

The second line asserts an experience. It needs a real basis, not simply a convincing delivery. FTC guidance makes this distinction important: AI avatars are not categorically prohibited, but fake or false testimonials can violate the rules. We go deeper on that in AI Avatars, Testimonials, and Product Claims and in Can You Create AI UGC Ads Without Fake Testimonials?.

Think beyond the talking head

An AI UGC-style ad can also include product footage, screen recordings, captions, and demonstrations. The presenter is one element—not the entire creative strategy. Some of the strongest formats combine a generated presenter with real product evidence, which we cover in Can an AI Presenter Hold and Demonstrate Your Product?.

At ShotCode, the starting question is what the audience needs to understand. The presenter format follows from that decision—not the other way around.
